Patient Information From SAGES

Thank you for visiting the SAGES Patient information page.

SAGES patient informationIf you are considering minimally invasive surgery (MIS), we encourage you review our SAGES Patient Information Brochures to learn if you may be a candidate for less invasive surgery, questions to ask your surgeon or physician, common procedures, how to prepare, what happens during your operation and what to expect after surgery.

We encourage patients to discuss minimally invasive options with their physicians and surgeons.

The Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimally Invasive Surgery, or MIS, is the optimal choice for a wide range of surgical procedures including: gallbladder or spleen removal, hernia repair, colon resection, anti-reflux (GERD), bariatric (weight loss) and appendectomy among others.

When compared to traditional surgery, MIS may offer patients many benefits including less pain, small incisions, less preoperative time, and quicker return to normal activity.

During a minimally invasive procedure, a surgeon makes several small incisions (¾ inch). A miniature camera (usually a laparoscope or endoscope) is then placed through one of the incisions and images from the camera are projected onto monitors in the operating room so surgeons can get a clear and magnified view of the surgical area. Specialized surgical tools are then used to perform the procedure.

Surgeons who do minimally invasive procedures are required to receive intensive training and practice and are highly specialized in their respective fields.
