SAGES SMART Enhanced Recovery Program

You are providing state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgery for your patients. But is your perioperative care meeting the same standards? What is keeping your patients in the hospital and impeding their return to normal function and performance?

Enhanced Recovery Pathways (ERPs) are standardized, coordinated, multidisciplinary perioperative care plans incorporating multiple interventions shown to improve recovery into one integrated patient-centered package. The addition of an Enhanced Recovery Pathway to a laparoscopic operation improves outcomes and maximizes the value of minimally invasive surgery.

SAGES SMART™ Enhanced Recovery Program wants to help SAGES members adopt ERPs into their practices. The SMART™ bowel pathway is a good place to start to learn about what can be included in your pathway. Click on the individual boxes to get the SMART™ recommendation and more information.

The SAGES/ERAS Society Manual of Enhanced Recovery Programs for Gastrointestinal Surgery, provides more in-depth guidance on implementation of ERP concepts.
