Research Opportunities

Grant Update Report

Per the SAGES research grant guidelines, you are required to complete this update twice a year or more until the conclusion of your project. Failure to complete these updates may result in a denial of future funding for all investigators. In addition to general grant updates, this form can be used for modification requests regarding change in institute, investigator(s), revision to proposal, budget, timeline modification/extension, or to closeout your project. An abstract must be submitted for the SAGES Scientific Session, which immediately follows the successful completion of the work. Additionally, upon acceptance of the abstract for presentation at the SAGES Scientific Session, a manuscript on the study and your findings must be sent to Surgical Endoscopy. A final manuscript from Surgical Endoscopy must be submitted to the SAGES office in order for your grant to be considered complete.

SAGES Research Grants

2024 Applications are now Open

Description:  The SAGES Research Awards are open to any principal investigator who is a current SAGES member, including Candidate Members. Please read all the guidelines carefully. SAGES would like to especially encourage grant funding to young investigators/candidate members in the hopes that funding through SAGES will lead to additional extramural funding.  Awards are conferred on a competitive basis by submission of a grant application, which is reviewed and evaluated by the SAGES Research & Career Development Committee and approved by the Governing Board. If your SAGES membership application is currently under review, please contact [email protected].

Amount:
up to $30,000
Applications: Applications will close Friday, November 10, 2023 at 5:00 PM E.S.T.

Learn more here.

Intuitive Surgical Robotic Surgery Grants

2024 Applications are now Open

Description:  The SAGES Robotic Surgery Research Grants, supported by a generous grant from Intuitive Surgical, are open to any principal investigator who is a current SAGES member, including Candidate Members. The purpose of these grants is to stimulate original research in robotic surgery.  SAGES is interested in reviewing grants focusing on the use of robotic surgery for procedures other than colorectal surgical procedures; there is a concurrent ASCRS Robotic Surgery Research Grant competition specifically focused on robotic colorectal surgery. The committee will only consider grants that involve commercially available products.  Please read all the guidelines carefully.  Awards are conferred on a competitive basis by submission of a grant application, which is reviewed and evaluated by the SAGES Research & Career Development Committee and approved by the Governing Board. If your SAGES membership application is currently under review, please contact [email protected].

Amount: up to $50,000
Applications: Applications will close Friday, November 10, 2023 at 5:00 PM E.S.T.

SAGES Disparities in Healthcare Grant

2024 Applications are now Open

Description: The pandemic has exposed many disparities in access to healthcare. In our own field of surgery, disparities in advance techniques including MIS have been identified; however, there is very little evidence to guide strategies in these disparities. This call for research would prioritize grants or quality improvement projects to potentially reduce disparities in access to MIS and robotic surgery that could be adopted more widely to address this healthcare need. This awards is open to any principal investigator who is a current SAGES member, including Candidate Members. Please read all the guidelines carefully.  Awards are conferred on a competitive basis by submission of a grant application, which is reviewed and evaluated by the SAGES Research & Career Development Committee and approved by the Governing Board. If your SAGES membership application is currently under review, please contact [email protected].

Amount:
up to $20,000
Applications: Applications will close Friday, November 10, 2023 at 5:00 PM E.S.T.

SAGES Career Development Award

2024 Applications are now Open

Description: The focus of this SAGES Foundation supported award is to provide funding for a young surgeon or surgeon-in-training for the development of critical skills required for their academic career in gastrointestinal and endoscopic surgery. The intent of this award is to provide a period of protected time equivalent to 6 months without clinical obligations. This can take the form of a delay in the start of a faculty role, ongoing residency training, a reduced clinical role for supplemental training/traveling fellowships, or intensive organized educational activities. This award will provide the awardee with a unique educational opportunity that would not otherwise be available. Awards are conferred on a competitive basis by submission of an award application, which is reviewed and evaluated by the SAGES Research & Career Development Committee and approved by the Governing Board.

Available Award: The award will be $60,000 to support travel, salary support, and/or tuition. (Note: The salary support portion of the grant will be taxable)
