Transaxillary Endoscopic Thyroid Lobectomy Using the Spider Surgical System

Barnard J Palmer, MD, Bernadette U Laxa, MD, William B Inabnet, MD. Mount Sinai School of Medicine

Transaxillary endoscopic thyroidectomy has been used more widely in recent years as technology advances. However, with monetary and time restraints of robotic use and difficulties with techniques of insufflation in a closed subcutaneous space, we utilize an alternative method of transaxillary thyroidectomy in an open system. The SPIDER surgical system uses flexible arms to provide the necessary retraction and exposure in a small, gasless working space to allow safe and easy removal of the thyroid gland.
