Objective of the technology or device: To provide a non-robotic 3D/HD vision system that enhances stereoscopic depth perception and spatial orientation with superior image quality that improves performance while preserving tactile feedback during basic and advanced minimally invasive procedures.
Description of the technology and method of its use or application: The Viking Systems 3D/HD Laparoscopic System uses proprietary high definition stereo camera technology along with dual channel laparoscope scope to relay a true 3D/HD image that displays into a 3D/HD monitor. The surgeons need only to wear unobtrusive circular polarized glasses during laparoscopic surgeries to experience the 3D/HD image. Additional certification or training is not required.
Preliminary results. When compared to a standard 2D laparoscopic system, the 3D/HD vision system provided improved laparoscopic skill performance and decrease skill time during different laparoscopic tasks of various complexities. The task times using the 3D/HD system were further improved during complex laparoscopic drills when compared to the 2D system. The initial clinical experience with the 3D/HD system during basic and complex minimally invasive surgical procedures has been gratifying (videos will be presented in 3D and glasses distributed to audience).
Conclusions/Future directions. The Viking 3D/HD Vision System delivers state-of-the-art 3D/HD vision during minimally invasive surgery, providing superior stereoscopic depth perception and visualization of critical anatomic structures. The 3D/HD system has the potential to improve skill performance and therefore clinical outcomes; reducing procedure time, minimizing equipment set-up and decreasing overall operating costs. Clinical studies evaluating the 3D/HD system are warranted.
