Dr. McCormick is thought leader with expertise in colon and rectal cancer, recurrent rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, bowel reconstructive procedures including sphincter preservation and j-pouch, complex pelvic surgery, laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, and transanal, endoscopic, and endoluminal surgery. He is the director of the multidisciplinary disease site for colorectal cancer care for the Allegheny Heath Network and the CoC certified NAPRC Rectal Cancer Center of Excellence.

Dr. McCormick is a Senior Examiner for American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery and has served on both the Oral and Written Examination Committees for the Board. He is the Commission on Cancer State Chair for Southwestern Pennsylvania. He is an American College of Surgeons Governor and serves in the Best Practice Workgroup for the college, and as past-president of American College of Surgeons, Southwestern PA Chapter. Dr. McCormick is vice president of the Pennsylvania Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He has served on the Standards Committee and the Self-Assessment Committee for the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery. Dr. McCormick is an invited manuscript reviewer for Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, Surgical Endoscopy, World Journal of Colorectal Surgery, International Journal of Colorectal Disease. He is also a certified proctor through the da Vinci robotic surgery platform.

Dr. McCormick has published over 45 peer-reviewed articles and abstracts and given countless invited lectures and research presentations on colon and rectal cancer care, minimally invasive colon and rectal surgery, surgical robotics, multidisciplinary team management and perioperative care. He has published numerous book chapters, reviews and editorials.
