Service Line Vice President, Quality and Safety Premier, Inc.

Carolyn Scott is the Service Line Vice President, Quality and Safety at Premier. She has over 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry, and has worked with large multi-hospital systems, academic medical centers, tertiary hospitals, and critical access facilities.   In her role at Premier, Carolyn has oversight for the strategic direction, planning and execution of the healthcare quality and safety collaborative efforts, including QUEST and the Partnership for Patients initiatives. The QUEST collaborative expands across multiple enterprise units and engages approximately 350 healthcare organizations. Using hospital specific data obtained from Premier’s Informatics products, QUEST is a collaborative effort focused on improving healthcare quality across the domains of cost, safety, evidence-based care, mortality, readmissions, and patient experience. The Partnership for Patients Collaborative has more than 450 hospitals that are committed to reducing hospital acquired complications and readmission by forty percent and twenty percent, respectively.

Carolyn leads the work of Premier’s Quality and Safety consulting team, which provides advisory services to help hospitals improve performance in areas of quality and safety, to better ensure success in Value Based Purchasing and Payment Penalty Programs set forth in the Affordable Care Act. This consulting team also provides services to support a hospital’s efforts in accreditation, Baldrige, ICD-10, physician performance/reporting, and care management.

Prior to joining Premier, Carolyn was a Director in KPMG’s advisory healthcare practice, and was responsible for developing a portfolio of offerings to assist clients in improving clinical, operational, and financial aspects of healthcare quality delivered. Prior to joining KPMG, Carolyn served as a Senior Director for VHA, Inc. In her role at VHA, Carolyn developed and led numerous national and regional healthcare quality improvement initiatives. Carolyn was employed by Texas Health Resources for more than a decade, and specialized in Emergency Nursing and Nursing Administration. Prior to entering the healthcare field, Carolyn worked for the financial regulatory industry, specifically the Federal Reserve and the Office of Thrift Supervision.

Background, Professional Licenses or Certifications, and Education. Carolyn received a Bachelor of Busines Administration – Finance degree from the University of Texas El Paso, a Bachelor of Science – Nursing degree from Texas Christian University, a dual Masters degree in Secondary and Higher Education/Counseling and Guidance from Texas A&M University, and a Masters in Healthcare Administration from the University of Texas at Arlington.   Carolyn maintains an active Texas nursing license, as well as a Federal Thrift Regulator designation by the United States Treasury Department.

Carolyn has served as an active participants in various National Quality Forum’s provider councils, and was chosen as one of ten jurors for the 2008 and 2010 National Quality Awards. She has received appointments in 2009 to the NQF’s Care Coordination Project Steering Committee, in 2010 to NQF’s Technical Advisory Panel for the Patient Safety Measures initiative, as well as to the American College of Cardiology/IHI Hospital to Home Steering Committee. In addition, since 2010, Carolyn has served as a juror for the American Hospital Association’s Quest for Quality Award Committee. In 2014, she was named as a national track chair for the National Patient Safety Foundation. She was appointed in multiple years as a reviewer for the American Heart Association’s Annual Scientific Forum. She is a frequent speaker on healthcare quality related topics and issues.
