SAGES/CAGS Educators Session: Reimagining Skill Development and Assessment for the Surgical Trainee
This session will look at how evolving technology and assessment science will influence the assessment of surgical trainees in the future. Specific elements to be explored will include video based assessment of surgical skill and its relation to outcomes, artificial intelligence and its promise and potential impact on skill acquisition and assessment, video-based coaching strategies to foster lifelong learning for surgeons, and entrustable professional activities and their application in gastrointestinal surgery training.
- Articulate the current iteration of, lessons learned about, and best practices with competency based educational strategies and specifically EPAs as a piece thereof, including as being promulgated through the work of the RCPS of Canada's Competency by Design project and the Fellowship Council.
- Appraise the current status of video based assessment and coaching strategies as a tool in training residents, fellows, and established practitioners in the area of technical skill and related operative outcomes.
- Prepare for the impact and potential promise of artificial intelligence on the future surgical training environment.
