Despite their benign nature, the location of an esophageal leiomyoma, nearby vital structures in the mediastinum, can make surgical resection quite demanding. We present a video showing the thoracoscopic resection of an esophageal leiomyoma located in the middle third of the esophagus.
Under general anesthesia, right videothoracoscopy was performed in prone position. Azygous vein was divided and the esophagus and the tumor were dissected from the trachea, left bronchi and the aorta. Esophageal muscular layer was then opened and the enucleation of the tumor was completed preserving mucosal integrity. Muscular layer was sutured with absorbable interrupted stitches.
