Purpose : This video demonstrates recent advances achieved in robotic capabilities specific to colon and rectal surgery. Some of these maneuvers are presented for the first time.
Methods : Ileal pouch-anal anastomosis is a complex procedure performed in all four quadrants and the deep pelvis. As such, performance of IPAA robotically was felt to be particularly useful to capture and display key technical enhancements achieved during our extensive robotic colectomy experience.
Results : The video confirms and documents the successful completion of an entire IPAA, including proctocolectomy, utlizing only intracorporeal robotic surgery.
Conclusions : IPAA can be performed robotically, safely and with comparable outcome.
There is no absolute requirement to undock the robotic arma, reposition the patient, nor perform part of the procedure extracorporeally when applying robotic techniques to a multiquadrant, complex procedure such as restorative proctocolectomy. Further improvements for robotic colorectal surgery are inevitable
