Vice Chair of Quality and Patient Safety

Job Description

Provide leadership in the conceptualization, development, implementation and measurement of the OSU Department of Surgery (DoS) approach to quality, patient safety and adverse event reduction. To communicate and implement strategic, operational and programmatic plans and policies to achieve the vision of having a culture where patient safety is a very high priority for clinicians and staff.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Planning for Quality and Patient Safety:
– Provide leadership in positioning DoS as a safety leader among regional hospitals,
academic medical centers nationally and in the health care industry at large.
– Prioritize work initiatives. Communicate systematic organizational vulnerabilities by
developing programs that analyze human, organizational and system factors that
contribute to adverse events.
– Guide the creation of models of care that will increase satisfaction of clinicians and staff
through risk segmentation, error proofing, standardization, and simplification.
– Develop programs that emphasize the participation of patients and their families in their
medical care.
– Plan for the future direction of quality and safety initiatives through benchmarking and
attention to other industries that have demonstrated leadership in quality and safety and
through the development of an overall quality operational plan for the DoS.
– Serve as an expert resource for patient safety, quality, regulatory, accreditation and
performance improvement issues.
– Support educational and research missions of DoS by designing and effecting patient
safety and quality programs that produce publishable results and provide educational
opportunities for faculty, house staff and students.
– Participate in a quality related external CME activity at least annually

Measurement and Assessment of Quality and Patient Safety:
– Provide leadership in the development of improved systems for tracking, evaluation and
communicating patterns in patient safety and quality.
– Develop and implement the necessary data and monitoring tools that will improve
analysis, reporting and follow-up of patient safety and quality issues.
– Serve as an expert resource in creating a body of knowledge and data repository
related to patient safety and quality.
– Monitor patient safety and outcomes data for trends and recommend actions
– Help develop new metrics for defining value.

Improvement of Processes and Systems:
– Manage operational plans.
– Assess, provide and lead adequate infrastructure to perform necessary work.
– Provide leadership in analysis, prioritizing and disseminating the results of patient
safety surveys and plans to address issues identified.
– Develop programs and activities designed to ensure that clinicians and staff incorporate
methods to improve the safe administration of care into all clinical processes.
– Direct efforts toward maintaining a state of readiness and compliance with
regulatory/accreditation standards in areas of quality and safety.
– Provide patient safety and quality advice for prioritization and development of DoS
clinical services and financial improvement opportunities with reliable and predictable
work processes.

Reporting & Communicating Results: Quality and Patient Safety Programs:
– Provide input to communicating safety and quality initiatives across the DoS.
– Provide regular reports to the Chair and Executive Leadership on patient safety and
quality performance improvement initiatives and facilitate the dissemination of
information to various constituencies.
– Form professional affiliations and networks with selected external national and
international organizations, to engender participation in collaborative projects, sharing of
lessons learned and contributing to the emerging body of patient safety knowledge
across the country. (e.g. Institute for Healthcare Improvement, National Patient Safety
Foundation, The Joint Commission, National Quality Foundation, Leapfrog Group, CMS,
AHRQ, Institute of Medicine, American College of Surgeons, and other public and
governmental organizations reporting safety and quality.)

Education:
Transfer improvement knowledge:
– Develop teams for quality improvement and patient safety education programs that
provide clinicians and staff with the underlying knowledge, skills and competencies
necessary for creating a safe healthcare environment.
– Identify risk management-related education opportunities throughout the DoS. Organize
learning from adverse outcomes.
– Direct Clinical Quality Improvement (CQI) education/behavior change efforts to improve
patient safety in high priority areas, with regular review and assessment of
effectiveness.
– Assist General Surgery Program Director to maintain compliance with the ACGME
CLER program.
– Assist General Surgery Program Director to maintain compliance with the ACGME
CLER program
– Support appropriate curriculum in residency, medical students, and fellowship training
programs, working with appropriate Education Leaders within the DoS.

Research:
– Foster academic research activities around quality and patient safety initiatives
– Increase number of publications with quality and patient safety focus
– Cultivate extramural research funding opportunities in quality and patient safety

Qualifications:
– Five to seven years Quality/Safety experience
– Qualify for academic appointment at the associate or professor rank
