Job Description

Clinical Assistant/Clinical Associate Professor, General Surgery

The Department of Surgery at the State University of New York at Stony Brook is seeking full-time faculty members to join the XGS, (Exigent General Surgery) acute care surgery group in the Division of Bariatric, Foregut and Advanced Gastrointestinal Surgery. This service covers non-trauma emergency general surgery. Surgeons in the practice also practice elective general surgery. The successful applicant will have a significant research track record and practice clinically within the realm of general surgery. Applicants must possess a MD/DO degree, and be eligible for a NYS license. They should have an academic focus with interest and commitment to clinical practice, medical education and research. Candidates must be BE/BC in surgery. Existing research funding is desirable, but not required. Fellowship training is strongly preferred. Academic rank will be commensurate with experience. To qualify for a senior faculty appointment, the candidate must meet the criteria established by the School of Medicine (School of Medicine’s Criteria for Appointment, Promotion and Tenure).

Stony Brook houses its own highly regarded medical school, nursing school, PA program and general surgical residency, graduating 6-7 residents per year. Surgeons in our program work with students, residents and fellows in our XGS/advanced general surgery and minimally invasive/bariatric fellowship programs, depending on clinical focus.

Stony Brook is ideally located on Long Island. We are on the Long Island Sound with easy access to water sports including, fishing, sailing and kayaking. There are excellent restaurants and a vibrant community. Long Island is known for some of the most beautiful beaches in the world in the nearby Hamptons and Fire Island. Schools in the Three Village School district, encompassing Stony Brook, are highly regarded. Three Village graduates are highly competitive for top schools around the country. At the western end of the island is New York City, only 45 miles away. NYC is also accessible by train. New York provides a plethora of entertainment options and its airports are a gateway to the world.

We extend this opportunity to a board-certified/board-eligible general surgeon.
