Job Description

Carle Health System, the leading healthcare provider in central Illinois has retained WittKieffer to seek an innovative, dynamic and collaborative physician leader with a strong clinical and academic foundation to serve as the Medical Director of Carle’s Digestive Health Institute (DHI).

Based in Urbana, Illinois, Carle is a physician led, vertically integrated healthcare system caring for a patient base of 1.4 million. Carle is anchored by the Level 1 trauma, 433-bed, Carle Foundation Hospital in addition to a 118-bed community hospital; a 24-bed critical access hospital; Carle Medical Group, the 597 physician multispecialty group; the Health Alliance Health Plan and numerous health related businesses. The System is closely aligned with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and, in partnership, has established the new Carle Illinois College of Medicine, which just accepted its first class in 2018.

This DHI Medical Director, will be at the forefront as Carle seeks to improve how digestive clinical care is delivered, while bringing extraordinary value, quality and safety outcomes to patients and their families within the community. The DHI Medical Director will provide overall physician executive leadership for digestive health services at Carle Health System, inclusive of gastroenterology and colon rectal surgery.

In partnership with the Vice President administrative dyad, the DHI Medical Director is responsible for the direction and oversight of all medical operations and has clinical and operational accountability for DHI’s performance and quality metrics. The DHI Medical Director understands and practices clinical medicine, articulates the vision of DHI as a regional leader in digestive health, and leads others in shared improvement and growth initiatives.

Candidates should have ten or more years of clinical practice in gastroenterology, with five years of progressive physician leadership experience required. Board Certification in gastroenterology is required and an added advanced degree is also highly desired. The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills and leadership experience gained ideally in a multi-site health care system. The DHI Medical Director has a unique opportunity to impact the Carle Digestive Health Institute and lead the delivery of word-class clinical, educational, research, and innovation services.
