Job Description
The General Surgery Section Head is responsible for oversight of the clinical, research, and educational aspects of the Section as well as guiding ongoing strategic planning and maintaining strong financial performance. The preferred candidate will also have a strong track record of mentorship and faculty development.
General Surgery includes 7 Divisions: Acute Care Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Surgical Oncology, and General Surgery at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. Our annual clinical volume consists of over 25,000 clinic visits and over 7,000 operative cases across all seven sites within Michigan Medicine.
The Section is fortunate to boast a superb roster of 44 clinical faculty, 9 research faculty, and 120 staff members. Our faculty hold 8 Endowed Professorships and 12 Director level leadership positions within the health system.
The Section has a diverse, robust research portfolio with a particular strength in health services research. Annual research funding has averaged $11.6 million over the previous three years with 23 extramurally funded investigators. Michigan Medicine recently launched the Center for Basic and Translational Science to enhance our ability to bring a “team science” approach to complex scientific problems.
Our General Surgery residency training program is one of the most important investments of our collective passion and resources. The residency prioritizes excellence and innovation in patient care, education, scientific inquiry, professional development, and a culture of inclusion. This is accomplished by intentionally developing autonomy in clinical care of diverse and complex patients with innovative techniques, providing additional mentored training in research and leadership, and maintaining a focus on developing each resident to their full potential. The program has consistently been rated #1 amongst large public hospitals and #1 in the Midwest by Doximity and US News & World Report.
The preferred candidate will be clinically active in one area of general surgery. Duties also include teaching medical students, house officers and fellows in clinical and didactic settings. The preferred candidate will be expected to establish an independent research program by successfully acquiring external funding as principal investigator, publishing and presenting results.
Candidates should have an M.D. or D.O. degree and postgraduate clinical training. They should hold or have the ability to obtain the appropriate medical licenses in the State of Michigan as well as be board certified in General Surgery. Candidates should be able to collaborate effectively with other clinicians. Excellent leadership and communication skills are essential. Evidence of clinical competence and competence in clinical and didactic teaching and research is expected.
