Job Description

General Surgeon

University of Maryland

The Department of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore is seeking a board-certified/board-eligible general surgeon to join its faculty and staff. We have an opportunity for an academic general surgeon at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor to join our Program in General Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. This full-time position is designed to foster the development of an academic surgeon with a focus in basic, clinical, or health services research related to topics relevant to GI surgery and/or wound healing. This opportunity is based at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Midtown and Main Campuses, and also includes an opportunity for affiliation with the Baltimore VA Medical Center.

This position is ideally suited for an individual with a strong interest in developing an academic general surgery practice, with a focus on GI surgical disorders, complex wound care, and hernia. Completion of an Advanced GI/Minimally Invasive Surgery fellowship is desirable. Anticipated case mix will span the breadth of general surgery to include advanced laparoscopy, endoscopy, and robotics. Experience and interest in complex wound care and an ability to work well in a team-based environment are essential.

This position is designed for an individual committed to excellence in clinical practice; however, the opportunity for academic growth in our group is substantial. We will protect 20% of time for research and will foster applications for career development awards through academic societies, the VA, and the NIH. Translational research opportunities include collaborations with several basic science investigators on campus. Our clinical research opportunities include clinical trial development and heath care services research utilizing NSQIP, Maryland State Databases, and VA databases. The University of Maryland School of Public Health is located on the UMB Campus with infrastructure support including a full time database manager and biostatistician.

The successful applicant will join the University of Maryland Department of Surgery in the Section of Advanced Gastrointestinal and Minimally Invasive Surgery within the Division of General and Oncologic Surgery. This individual will have a faculty appointment at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Metrics for success will include clinical program development as well as scholarship and success in extramural funding. Significant interaction with GI medicine and Division faculty and trainees is envisioned as we seek to grow general surgery programs of excellence across The University of Maryland Medical System. This recruit will report directly to Jonathan Pearl, MD, Section Chief of Advanced Gastrointestinal and Minimally Invasive Surgery.
