Description

The University of Buffalo Bariatric Surgery Fellowship Program invites applications for a full-time Bariatric Surgery Fellow position for the 2026-2027 academic year. The position would start August 1st, 2026.

The University at Buffalo Bariatric Fellowship provides exclusively and predominantly bariatric surgical training. The fellow is exposed to a variety of surgical experiences and many advanced procedures. The clinical experience is gained through progressive responsibility and increased autonomy over the course of the one-year fellowship.

The program hopes to train fellows who are not only committed to advancing their surgical knowledge and skills, but to providing exemplary care to the patients of Buffalo, New York.

The fellowship follows the national Bariatric Surgery curriculum set forth by the Fellowship Council. The program is currently undergoing the Fellowship Council accreditation process.

In addition to the objectives provided by the Fellowship Council, elements unique to our UB fellowship include:

  1. Train the fellow in robotic surgery.
  2. Train the fellow in endoscopic bariatric procedures
  3. Provide a dedicated teaching experience in which the fellow educates other learners.
  4. Incorporate research experience which can be presented at SAGES.

At the conclusion of the fellowship in Bariatric Surgery, the fellow will be able to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art medical & surgical care to patients with morbid obesity and obesity related diseases. This will include the ability to investigate, diagnose, recommend therapeutic options, perform operative procedures, and provide all aspects of care, including pre-operative, peri-operative, and late postoperative care. To achieve this goal, this curriculum provides a guide to the topics for study, and the knowledge and skills required to become a Bariatric Surgeon.
