Chief of General Surgery
UCLA West Valley Medical Center – Department of Surgery, UCLA

The Department of Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA is seeking an outstanding surgeon and leader to serve as Chief of General Surgery at the UCLA West Valley Medical Center. This faculty appointment is at the Associate or Full Professor level in the clinical health sciences series.

This newly established leadership role will oversee the development of a general surgery service at the West Valley Medical Center in West Hills, California. The Chief will lead a team of 3–4 surgeons as part of the Division of General Surgery, known for excellence in patient care, research, and innovation across subspecialties such as colorectal, minimally invasive, endocrine, and trauma surgery.

The Chief will partner closely with departmental leadership to expand the Division’s clinical, academic, and educational missions in the San Fernando Valley. The role includes oversight of clinical operations, faculty recruitment and development, program growth, and quality assurance. The successful candidate will help shape and grow this new service while upholding UCLA’s standards of excellence, collaboration, and inclusion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Administration:
    • Establish policies and clinical standards
    • Represent the program in faculty development, quality improvement, and strategic growth
    • Collaborate across departments to promote interdisciplinary care and institutional development

  • Clinical Duties:
    • Provide general surgical care (inpatient, outpatient, OR)
    • Maintain a high standard of professional and clinical performance

  • Academic & Education:
    • Supervise residents or fellows as applicable
    • Foster faculty development and continuing education
    • Engage in scholarly activities and research

Qualifications:

  • MD or equivalent degree

  • Board-certified or board-eligible in General Surgery

  • Eligible for California medical licensure

  • Strong academic track record in teaching, research, and leadership

  • Excellent clinical, interpersonal, and communication skills

The successful candidate will demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to inclusive excellence. Experience in administrative or leadership roles is highly desirable.

Compensation:

Salary will be commensurate with academic rank and experience, with an initial base range of $201,500 to $535,000 in accordance with UC salary scales and policies. This position is also eligible for additional compensation under the health sciences compensation plan.
