The Department of Surgery at Atrium Health and Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Charlotte, North Carolina, is seeking an academic bariatric and minimally invasive surgeon to join the Section of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery.
Position Highlights
- Qualifications:
Candidates must have completed fellowship training in Minimally Invasive Surgery with a focus on bariatric surgery.- Strong commitment to patient care, education, research, and leadership at local and national levels.
- Eligible for appointment at the rank of Assistant (>2 years) or Associate Professor of Surgery.
- ASMBS certified bariatric surgeon required (qualified to be certified)
- Scope of Practice:
The position emphasizes modern bariatric surgery, including minimally invasive and endoscopic procedures such as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RNY), sleeve gastrectomy, SADI/DS, and revisions, utilizing robotic and endoscopic technologies. - Education and Leadership:
- Active involvement in the education of fellows, residents, medical students, and advanced practice practitioners (APPs).
- Potential to serve as the site director for the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSQIP) as the current director transitions.
- Collaboration with the Section Chief to establish strategic vision and direction for the COE location of Bariatric Surgery.
- Research:
- Participation in clinical and translational research.
- Fellowship Program:
The Fellowship Council-accredited MIS/Bariatric Surgery Fellowship program selects two fellows annually, offering clinical and research opportunities.
This position is ideal for:
- Associate Professors seeking opportunities for leadership in a multidisciplinary setting.
- Assistant Professors (> 2 years) seeking promotion into leadership roles (including MBSQIP site director, fellowship directorship, and research leadership opportunities) with research and teaching interest.
Candidates should possess expertise in managing patients with prior bariatric procedures (including SADI/DS) and offering innovative treatments to future patients. Candidates must be willing to work at both Cabarrus and Mercy facilities.
