Roger Ray, MD

Executive Vice President and Chief Physician Executive
Carolinas HealthCare System

Dr. Roger Ray serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Physician Executive for Carolinas HealthCare System. He is responsible for the management and direction of the Carolinas HealthCare System Medical Group comprised of more than 2,500 employed physicians and providers and more than 500 locations. He oversees medical education, trauma, transplant, and research and has service line management responsibility for Levine Cancer Institute, Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute and CHS Behavioral Health. Further, within the CHS Metro region, Dr. Ray leads the System Chief Medical Officers and the teams responsible for system care coordination, medical staff services, infection prevention, system quality, safety, accreditation, and mobile medicine.

Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 2007, Dr. Ray served as the Chief Quality Officer for BayCare Health System, an integrated, multi-hospital system in Tampa, Florida. His prior physician executive roles included Chief Medical Officer for Morton Plant Mease Healthcare in Clearwater, Florida and Chief Medical Officer for AnMed Health System in Anderson, South Carolina. Dr. Ray practiced clinical neurology for 10 years prior to taking on his administrative roles.

Dr. Ray received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and his medical degree from West Virginia University. He also received a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Colorado. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and the Certifying Commission in Medical Management. He currently serves on the board of the Carolina Center for Hospital Quality and Patient Safety.
