Laparoscopic Live Donor Nephrectomy
Presented by: NYU School of Medicine
Course Director: Michael Edye MD
Tuesday, March 12th - New York University Medical Center
Lectures: 7:30 AM - 11:30 AM, live demonstration,12:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Wednesday, March 13th Somerville, NJ
Lab: 8:00 AM to 12 Noon
Objectives:
Participants will:
1.) Learn the preoperative anatomic and physiologic evaluation of eligible living kidney donors;
2.) Recognize the anatomic indications for choosing the left or right kidney;
3.) Be familiar with the performance of laparoscopic donor nephrectomy including tissue preservation, atraumatic surgical technique and the advantages and disadvantages of hand-assist devices;
4.) Have reviewed the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of early and late complications of laparoscopic donor procedures;
5.) Understand how experience with laparoscopic donor nephrectomy can improve operative technique in other laparoscopic procedures such as splenectomy, adrenalectomy and colectomy.
Who should attend:
Laparoscopic, transplant and urologic surgeons involved in renal transplant programs should attend didactic and practical portions of the course. Transplant coordinators and other ancillary personnel involved in advising and counseling potential donors will benefit from the didactic part of the course.

A laparoscopic donor nephrectomy will be performed as a live transmission from the
operating rooms at NYU Medical Center.Course Description:
Surgeons involved with live donor nephrectomy are well aware of the double jeopardy inherant in the operation: the potential for 200% mortality, one half of which is in an undiseased donor. Yet transplant surgeons are poised to make significant improvements in quality of life for donors after donation with the advent of laparoscopic techniques for kidney harvest. This is challenging surgery and the skills required for its safe, consistent performance are not easily acquired. Special attention will be paid to a discussion of post-transplant renal function, the incidence and avoidance of complications encountered in donors and recipients and strategies to maximize graft function. Live demonstration of a laparoscopic donor nephrectomy and hands-on animal laboratory experience will complete the practical content of the course.
Lab Description:
Participants will perform a left and a right laparoscopic nephrectomy in the anesthetized pig using all the techniques discussed of careful dissection to prevent parenchymal and vascular injury.
Logisitics:
Shuttles from the main conference hotel will be available from 6:45 AM for the didactic and live demonstration. For lab participants, a bus will depart from the main conference hotel at 6:30 AM on Wednesday 13th March for the Ethicon lab in Somerville NJ.
CME Accreditation:
NYU Post Graduate Medical School is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor Continuing Medical Education for physicians. NYU designates this CME activity for 8 credit hours for the lecture and live demonstration only, 12 credit hours for lecture, live demonstration and laboratoryin Category I of the Physician Recognition Award for the American Medical Association. Each physician should only claim those hours of credit that he/she actually spends in the educational activitiy.
