Course Description:
Over 100 years ago, the first endocrine surgery techniques were developed by the surgical leaders of the day, including such giants as Theodor Kocher, William Halsted, and Felix Mandl. The techniques of thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy were developed, both of which required a transverse cervical incision and the creation of myocutaneous flaps to gain access to the thyroid/parathyroid glands. The safety and efficacy of these operations have withstood the test of time. However, until recently, few major refinements had been made in the technique of thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy.
The first report of laparoscopic adrenalectomy was published in 1992 and since that time there has been a rapid development of minimally invasive techniques for other endocrine glands, including the parathyroid and thyroid glands and the pancreas. These minimally invasive approaches result in a quicker recovery, less postoperative pain, improved cosmesis, and an equal cure rate when compared to conventional techniques.
This Minimally Invasive Endocrine Surgery program is an intensive two-day course designed to provide a comprehensive review of endocrine surgery, with a major emphasis on minimally invasive techniques for the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands as well as the pancreas. The course includes didactic lectures, live surgery and a hands-on experience in an animal model.Accreditation:
