SAGES & IPEG Tours

Guests of both IPEG and SAGES registrants may register for any of the tours. Please see the Registration form(s). Please note, however, that some of the tours begin before the start of the SAGES meeting and several are offered after the close of the IPEG meeting. Tour #1: Classic Atlanta

SITES INCLUDED: Governor's Mansion Atlanta History Center Swan House

Visit Atlanta's most prestigious address, the GEORGIA GOVERNOR'S MANSION, a lovely example of classic Greek Revival style architecture with a fine collection of Federal Period furnishings. Next, explore the ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER featuring exhibits on the history of Atlanta including "Gone With The Wind", Civil War, and African-American history. Then we tour the SWAN HOUSE, a 1928 Classic Revival, National Register home. There is time to browse the SWAN COACH HOUSE GIFT SHOP and ART GALLERY after a wonderful lunch in the beautiful SWAN COACH HOUSE RESTAURANT.

Tour #2: Peachtree Panorama/CNN

Tour #3 : Highlights of Atlanta

Glimpse Atlanta's Civil War history at the impressive CYCLORAMA. The 1864 Civil War Battle of Atlanta revolves around you, literally, in this immense painting in the round. Stop at the JIMMY CARTER LIBRARY AND MUSEUM to review President Jimmy Carter's life and administration, and a replica of the Oval Office. Then we visit the MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. CENTER which pays tribute to one of America's great leaders. Visit the blue "river of life" and the dramatic marble tomb with the inscription: "1929-1968. Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty I'm free at last"..

Tour# 4: Artlanta

Take a personal peak at a small part of the art scene of Atlanta by actually meeting, talking and viewing the artist's works at the ARTIST'S ATELIER. This 15 year old cooperative serves as studio, classroom and gallery in oneÑwhere artists can meet to paint, draw and sculpt, or simply exchange ideas. To view the great masters, we visit the HIGH MUSEUM OF ART which houses European and American paintings, African, decorative and twentieth-century art, photography and graphics. A special exhibit of Frank Lloyd Wright furniture and the American impressionist, John Twachtman, is featured at the museum.

Tour # 5: Antebellum South

Enjoy Southern hospitality at Georgia's premier Southern buffet, the BLUE WILLOW INN, housed in a 1900's Greek Revival Mansion.

Tour # 6: Stone Mountain Park

Get away from the bustle of the city and visit STONE MOUNTAIN PARK. This 3200 acre recreation site surrounds an awesome granite mountain which rose from the earth over 200 million years ago. Stop at Memorial Hall for a story of the mountain carving then ride the SWISS SKYLIFT which gives us a breathtaking ride past the magnificent Memorial Carving Confederate leaders. Stroll through a typical ANTEBELLUM PLANTATION of the 1800's. Nineteen buildings are restored and authentically furnished to duplicate an actual plantation. Lunch is on your own at any of the quaint in-park dining options.

Tour #7: Antiques, Accessories & Art

Join us for an exciting visit to BENNETT STREET, Atlanta's marketplace of shops and galleries. Stop at the INTERIORS MARKET, with 45 plus upscale antique and decorative art shops all under one roof. Great antique finds including 18th and 19th century American, and European antiques, rugs, paintings, primitives, imports, architecturals, garden statuary and an endless supply of decorative accessories. Next we explore the STALLS, where more than 70 dealers ranging from the serious to the wildly creative offer everything from furniture and porcelain to jewelry and antique linens. The knowledgeable staff can help you locate those hard-to-find objects d'art. Coffee and an assortment of sweets will be available for our enjoyment at the Stalls.
