OBJECTIVES: At the completion of this activity, the participants should be able to:
- Evaluate pre-op tests for GERD, and discuss appropriate selection of patients for laparoscopic fundoplication based on their pre-op tests.
- Increase their understanding of the techniques used to perform laparoscopic fundoplication in children and adolescents, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the various approaches.
- Evaluate gastric emptying and discuss prevention and/or management of the "gagging/retching syndrome".
- Develop advanced skills for performing minimal access foregut surgery through experience in the animate laboratory.
Who Should Attend:
- Practicing pediatric surgeons or surgeons who perform surgery in children. Should be experienced in other laparoscopic surgical procedures and wish to expand their knowledge and techniques for laparoscopic surgery.
- Fourth or Fifth-year residents (IPEG surgeon-in-training members only) with significant experience in basic laparoscopic techniques.
- Nurse and GI Assistants with an interest in minimally invasive surgery may attend the didactic session.
