Florida Hospital in Orlando, Florida is looking for a dynamic and experienced, board-certified General Surgeon to serve as Program Director of our General Surgery Residency Program. This employment opportunity is for a general surgeon who has a passion for teaching. New director would lead a state-of-the-art program based at a tertiary facility of 1100 beds. Ranked by US News and World Report, Florida Hospital has consecutively been awarded “Best Hospital” for the past two years in the state of Florida.
Established in 2007, the program was originally led by a surgeon who now serves as Florida Hospital’s Chief Academic Officer of Graduate Medical Education. The general surgery residency is now comprised of ten faculty and a total of ten surgical residents, accepting two new residents per academic year. The program specializes in innovative minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopic, surgical oncology, breast surgery, acute care surgery, and surgical critical care. General and fellowship trained surgeons representing, endocrine, liver disease, gastrointestinal, and liver and bile duct disease are just of a few of the many specialties also offered in the program. Collaboration with other surgical specialties includes Critical Care, Transplant, Oncology, and Colorectal Surgery. The new program director would have the responsibility to lead the program in compliance with ACGME guidelines. Candidate should be interested in and experienced with expanding a residency program to enhance program visibility as well as increase the number of accepted residents each year. Duties would be split between dedicated administrative time, teaching residents/medical students, and operating. Opportunities also exist for collaboration with our medical school affiliation at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. A minimum of five years’ experience in Graduate Medical Education as an Associate Program Director or Program Director is required for consideration.
Resources for the program include Florida Hospital’s Translational Research Institute, a prototype lab at the Institute for Surgical Advancement, the use of the Nicholson Center for simulation, training, and innovation, and an intraoperative MRI suite based in the hospital. For over a decade, the Florida Hospital Nicholson Center has trained more than 50,000 physicians from around the globe on leading-edge clinical and surgical techniques. Utilizing state-of-the-art surgical suites and labs, plus advanced medical simulation robotics and learning centers, medical professionals can acquire and advance their skills in a highly collaborative surgical learning environment.
Ideal candidate should bring a vision to increase academic activity including research, posters, and presentations. Dynamic communication skills and the ability to fit within the mission and vision of Florida Hospital are required.
Requirements: Minimum of five years’ faculty experience as a Program Director or an Associate Program Director. Physician must be board certified in General Surgery.
