The School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Division of Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgery within the Department of Surgery. The next Division Chief of GI Surgery at UAB will play a key leadership role in advancing the mission, operations and service of the department within the School of Medicine as well as the greater Birmingham region.
The UAB Department of Surgery has earned a national and international reputation for its unique blending of advanced medicine, excellent patient care and research. The surgeons within the Division of GI Surgery specialize in both routine and complex gastrointestinal surgical problems, including both benign and malignant conditions. The group offers unique expertise in pancreatic islet cell transplantation for chronic pancreatitis and is the only program in the southeast to do so. The Division also is proud to be designated as a Level 1A Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence accredited by the American College of Surgeons and offers an accredited fellowship in advanced minimally invasive surgery.
Members of the Division have several active areas of investigation. UAB has one of only five Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) grants in Pancreatic cancer, allowing their patients access to participate in novel diagnostic and treatment modalities.
UAB seeks as its next Division Director of GI Surgery an exceptional clinician scientist with proven skills and values to lead a highly successful clinical, educational and research enterprise. The Division Director will be expected to collaborate effectively with the leadership of UAB and affiliated health care partners, while being visible and active in the Birmingham community to address its medical and programmatic needs. The successful candidate will ensure the efficient utilization of operating room resources to include operating rooms, equipment and personnel as well as collaborate with the quality and patient safety officers to insure the highest standard of care throughout UAB Medicine core surgical locations.
The successful candidate ideally should possess exemplary patient care skills, a commitment to advancing GI surgical modalities and treatments, an outstanding national research reputation, and a proven fiscal stewardship. Qualified candidates should have a record of transformative, collaborative and visionary leadership and highly regarded as a clinical and research leader in his/her fields.
